Lawyer.se teams up with East Sweden Game

Lawyer.se is happy to announce that we are teaming up with East Sweden Game.

Based out of Linköping, Sweden, East Sweden Game is a business incubator where videogame studios in the region can come for advice, coworking space and events. But it’s really about community, said Tomas Ahlström, founder and general manager of East Sweden Game.

“You become a member by being active in our community,” he explained. “There is no application. No monthly fees. If you come to our events, hang out in our office spaces and tag along on our after-work get-togethers, you’re a member.”

Tomas has been active in the videogame industry since the 90s, first by building games and then as an entrepreneur.

“I realized there were others better than me at developing games, while I preferred to meet people and get things done,” he said.

In 2017, Tomas founded East Sweden Game. After a request from a municipality-owned commercial real estate developer, he started thinking about how to grow the videogame industry in the region.

“Since it wasn’t really established here, it wouldn’t matter how much guidance or venture capital we offered. So, we started with the people.”

East Sweden Game became a venue for anyone in the region interested in videogame development. It’s been a point of emphasis for him and his team to keep things local.

“We don’t want to just grow and grow and grow. If that happens, we risk losing that sense of community we’ve established.”

At the same time, he is conscious of the international nature of videogames.

“When it comes to investors, publishers, recruitment, we need to look beyond Sweden’s borders,” he said. “Our roots grow local, but our foliage extends out into the world.”
There are legal aspects to consider in all phases of creating a videogame. In teaming up with Lawyer.se, Tomas hopes to provide members of the East Sweden Game community with even more assistance.

“Maybe you’re working with a partner or a publisher reaches out to you or another studio wants to acquire you or merge. Those questions arise all the time, and then legal advice is crucial,” he noted.

“Everyone at Lawyer knows so much about the industry and has so much personal experience. They often know right away what advice to give,” said Tomas, adding, “They’re always available so even if you’re just grabbing a coffee and ask a legal question, you get a response right away.”
